Since we are all into the test season here's a little quiz:
3 friends went for a meal. The meal cost $25.
Each of them paid $10. So the change is $5 right?
They each took back $1 and left $2 for the waiter as tips.
So that means each of them paid $9 right?
Now $9 x 3 (the 3 friends) = $27
$27 + $2 (waiter tips) = $29
Where did the $1 go?

OK, I don't know where the $1 went, but I think there's a trick in the calculation.
Each of them paid $9, correct. But then the waiter's tip of $2 should not be ADDED to their sum, i.e. 27+2, but rather DEDUCTED, i.e. 27-2, which will give the answer $25. And this answer corresponds to the cost of the meal.
It is true to say each paid $9, but the point is that the waiter's tip is not an extra which is added. It is already included in the $9.
Meal cost is $25. Each should pay $8.33. The waiter's tip is $2, so each person's contribution is $0.67. Add the individual parts of the bill and the waiter's tip, 8.33+0.67=9. Multiply that by three and you get $27.
It's the same idea as the difference between "government tax included" and "government tax not included".
(Imagine. I just had a maths test this morning, and now more maths!)
