Fast Facts: Taman Negara

Just some info about activity costs at Taman Negara park HQ, per person unless stated otherwise:

Other costs:

Insect repellant, walking shoes (if necessary), hiking stick, hat, other stuff for a trip into the jungle. This is NOT a beach holiday. :-P

There's an alternative suggestion for trip structure; I got in touch with this guide called Man from Kampung Kuala Tahan (across the river from Taman Negara park HQ), and he has a rather interesting suggestion. We'll very likely be able to see and experience more, but it will be somewhat tougher than staying at Nusa Camp.

He has a package for 5 days and 4 nights (in the jungle; 7 days total) which goes something like this:

Day 1
Arrive at Taman Negara
Check in at Tembeling Riverview Chalets (directly across park HQ)

Day 2
9.30 a.m. Leave by boat for Canopy Walkway
Lunch
Trek up Dedari Hill
Set camp on hilltop and observe sunset
Sleep under the starry night

Day 3
Breakfast of toast with peanut butter and jam and hot coffee/milo
Trek downhill
Leave by boat to Kuala Keniam (45 mins)
Trek 8.5km to Gua Kepayang Besar
Overnight inside the cave with a bonfire

Day 4
Trek 6.5km to Kumbang Hide (animal observation spot)
Trek 5.5km to a small clear river
Lunch and swim at river
Back to Kumbang Hide

Day 5
Trek 10km to Lata Berkoh waterfalls
Set camp there

Day 6
Trek 8km back to Kuala Tahan
Check in again at Tembeling Riverview Chalets

Day 7
Back to civilisation

Everything will be arranged. Cost RM 700 per person, including food and camping gear.


Admittedly this sounds very rigorous and daunting but in my opinion as an amateur ecologist, it's the best way to actually see what there is in Taman Negara or any other rainforest. If we don't actually penetrate the jungle and merely walk along the trails nearer the entrance, we probably won't see much more than in a place like FRIM.

The third option would be a combination of both resort stay and camping trip. Man also offers shorter treks which we could include as part of the trip, and spend the rest of our time at Nusa. All trips require minimum four people.
