Just wanna tie the whole discussion on to a broader level, suggesting why this situation is happening in our beloved VI.
Perhaps from all that we have seen in our present education system, we should all not have high expectations on our teachers nor our education system. THe number of rotten apples-teachers are really pulling down the performance of the other excellent teachers in the public eye.
Each teacher teaches to his or her own conscience. That is, let's say, as a teacher, I can choose whether or not to go out of my way and help my students. Some choose not to and some choose to.
It's apt that we have such high standards for our education system and its teachers.
But it would be amusing to note as well, that, perhaps we have a tad bit too high expectations on our current teachers and education system. After all, let's not forget that there were teachers who entered the field because they were told this is an easy field, half day job, and you don't need to work hard! :P
There are such rotten apples in our education system, and I cannot see how it can be further improved unless first and foremost, we get rid of these maggots, who not only de-motivate their students, but also discourage their counterparts and pull the whole sector down.
The solution lies in the grass-roots. And because it's not a feasible idea to replace ALL these worms, the next thing to do would be to send a call down from the top down below, to buck up or get replaced. But of course, like Malaysia boleh, the call gets watered down in the passage of time, and before long, who heeds the call anymore but the committed teachers?
But one thing we should definitely do is that to recognise that this is our present situation, malady, affecting the country's education system. It is a known fact, that some teachers can really rest on their laurels and still think they can 'pergi syurga!'. :P too much hope can bring disappointments.
That said, I'm not discrediting those who are really striving in what they are doing, teaching. They are the role models all teachers should look up to. But even at most times, even their boss, the government, does not recognise them but instead those rotten apples as worthy of promotion and 'guru cemerlang' and what nots.
But it's great to see people who are still concerned for our education system. :)

i agree with mel that it lies in the conscience of the person whether to teach properly or not. but i think that it is not wrong for us to have high expectations or 'too high' expectations of our education system. we need to have that in order to mould the next generation. for those who entered the educating line just because they think it's an easy field...that just shows what kind of person they already are don't u think? how then do we expect them to do their jobs properly when in choosing their own career they opt for the easy road? what more can be expected of them when we ask them to help guide others?
