Songs of the Bananas

Some of you got the culture shock of your lives when you stepped into a predominantly Mandarin-speaking world (among the Chinese) in university.

I was blessed/fortunate/privileged enough to find a small-but-happening community of 'bananas' in my Residential College (Third College), and these people really helped see me through my first year and continue to encourage me.

Perhaps it was KL, perhaps it was the VI, or perhaps both, that moulded me into a person who can never quite see eye to eye with the very 'Chinese' way of doing things; by this I mean racial polarisation in university, not the Chinese culture itself.

So we bananas in college have always endeavoured, directly or indirectly, to make a difference and rock the college and university.

There is a very MCA-like organisation in every college called the Chinese Cultural Club (CCC) although it is usually known as the CC or Chinese Community. Being Chinese by descent, bananas are automatically a part of this, just like the non-banana Chinese.

Back in 2007, the five of us bananas (Adrian, Andrew, Amos, Ben and How) plus a number of non-banana friends (Shannon, Jee Haw and Jimmy, among others) were determined to make bananas one of the most happening things that ever happened to Third College.

We wrote a couple of songs, and somewhere along the way they got recorded and posted on YouTube. Enjoy!

Hello RJO, there are about 700 students in Third College.

There is a main dining room where people mix together, but yes, self-segregation is often the norm.
